In the latest incarnation of its trademark marathon fuel economy run, Petron once again reconfirmed the superior performance of its Petron Xtra Unleaded gasoline, with the winning team traveling 1,343.7-kilometers on one full tank.
Team Floresca-Perez, driving a Honda Jazz 1.3-CVT, outlasted nine other media teams, finally running out of fuel in Polangui, Albay, after having traversed the entire length of Luzon from Bangui, Ilocos Norte, all the way down to Matnog, Sorsogon, and then back-tracking to Albay.
Roman Floresca, assistant business editor of The Philippine Star, and Delfin Perez, assistant business editor of Manila Bulletin, surprised everyone with their first-place finish. While they were not able to break the standing 1,400-km record, both men were pleased with their achievement. At an estimated 31.99 kilometers per liter, the feat was certainly outstanding.
At second place is The Philippine Star team of Jeff Reyes and Lester Dizon, with 1,336-kms traveled. Third place went to Jess Garcia of DZRH and Joseph Javier of DZRB, with 1,326.70-km.
Other results are as follows: Top Gear (Vernon Sarne and Jaykee Evangelista) – 1,295.40-km; DZMM (Angelo Almonte and Ricky Velasco) – 1,268.51-km; AutoReview (Ronald de los Reyes and Raymund Sanchez) – 1,268.50-km; AutoIndustriya (Raymond Yound and Brent Co) – 1,257.80-km; Stoplight TV (Egay Quesada and Giosi Mendoza) – 1,256-km; Cyberpress (Jing Garcia and Melvin Calimag) – 1,227.20-km; and Isports La’ang (Ira Panganiban and Andy Sevilla) – 1,158.50-km.
Driving the 1300-cc iDSI variant of the Honda Jazz and Honda City with continuously variable transmission (CVT), all ten media teams broke the 1,114-km mark set by motoring expert Pocholo Ramirez in the first eco-run held in 2005, but were unable to breach the 1,400-km record set by Team Zayco Hermanos in 2006. Official cars were provided by Honda Cars Philippines and its dealers: Honda Cars Quezon City group, Honda Cars Kalookan, Honda Cars Makati, Honda Cars Shaw, and Honda Cars Pangasinan.
To ensure trouble-free driving, Motolite provided brand-new batteries for the competition vehicles. The teams were also able to continue working on the road courtesy of Neo laptop computers with Intel dual core processors. PLDT WeRoam and PLDT myDSL provided broadband internet access.
